Pat Sloan About the Sew Along This Year
The West has a special place in our hearts. We may live there, have friends and family there, or we visit the west. So many of us have an immense love for Western things. No matter where you live or what country you are in, the history and Vibe of the American West has been available to us with incredible movies, enthralling books, TV shows, brilliant paintings, magazines, country music, and celebrities who embody that feeling of the West.

Let’s kick off our Out West! sew along by exploring the Western movies on ‘the big screen.’ A movie puts us ‘all-in’ with story, sound tracks, outfits, and scenery. You have all your senses touched when you watch a movie, and on a big screen it is the very best!

As a kid I remember spending many a Saturday afternoon at the matinee watching movies and some of my favorites were the Westerns.

When I went searching for lists of the top Western movies there are opinions!
Here is a Baker’s Dozen list of Top Westerns, in no order

1. High Noon - 1952
2. Stagecoach - 1939
3. The Searchers – 1956
4. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre - 1948
5. Once Upon a Time in the West - 1968
6. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - 1969
7. The Outlaw Josey Wales - 1976
8. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - 1962
9. The Good The Bad and the Ugly – 1966
10. The Magnificent Seven – 1960
11. Blazing Saddles - 1974
12. Maverick- 1994
13. Unforgiven - 1992

Read about top Western movies here.

And a ‘top 100’ list is always fun.

When Spaghetti Westerns Ruled the Cinemas
Spaghetti Westerns - It seems many movies went into this category then became classics later on. But what is a Spaghetti Western? From wiki – ‘It is a broad sub-genre of Western films that emerged in the mid-1960s in the wake of Sergio Leone's film-making style and international box-office success. The term was used by American critics and those in other countries because most of these Westerns were produced and directed by Italians’.

The crew were mostly Italian and European with the cast being many nationalities. They were mostly filmed in Italy and Spain where the landscape was similar to the American West.

There is a great read about Spaghetti Westerns here.

With the dynamic collaboration of director Sergio Leone and composer Ennio Morricone, the style and sound were locked in with the Dollars Trilogy — A Fistful of DollarsFor a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Did you know there were over six hundred European Westerns made between 1960 and 1978?

What are your favorite Westerns? Mine are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.
